THE DIVERS EQUIPMENT IS AS FOLLOWS
This is a Mark V US Navy pattern diving Helmet. Made by Morse in 1944 , this actual one previously owned by Salvage Diver Jack Daley, photo available upon request. Hard Hat outfit best suited for arduous bottom oriented work, later replaced by the Mk 12. Mk V helmet comprises a spun copper bonnet with bronze fittings . It has 4 windows or view ports and is equipped with an inlet and exhaust valve , both of the non-return type. The main view port at the front known as the faceplate is hinged and secured for diving with a bevelled wing nut. The bonnet or helmet is secured to the breastplate with a large screw thread. The diving suit is made up of vulcanised rubber and a heavy rubber collar forms the junction with the breastplate and this makes a watertight seal making the whole outfit what is known as a closed dress apparatus. The weight belt is used to overcome the diver’s positive buoyancy when in the water. The diver’s shoes give protection and added weight and help the diver maintain an upright position. The diver’s knife has one blade edge and a cutting edge and is secured in its brass sheath with a screw thread. The whole outfit weighs approximately 198lbs.
